Former TX Firefighter Convicted of Killing a Tow Truck Driver Faces Anger and Tears

Below is the story from KHOU Channel 11. To see the video, click here. Our condolences to the family and acquaintances of Steven Ray Hardin.

Former Houston firefighter Barry Crawford was in court for a probation hearing.

Crawford was convicted of murder after shooting a wrecker driver in 1998. Steven Ray Hardin was trying to tow Crawford's vehicle when he was gunned down.

A jury gave Crawford probation and 1,000 hours of community service, but the Hardin family says he’s been skirting those orders and they're furious.

A judge reimposed 400 hours of community service and ordered Crawford to give up his tax stimulus check to help pay restitution.

But the family did not get an apology. They say there’s never been one.

“You could at least say ‘your sorry’ to his sister, his mother,” said one courtroom observer. “What kind of man are you Crawford? You’re a coward, that’s what you are, a murdering coward.”

“This is his sister. You didn’t even apologize to her. If I could get to you ... " said another woman.

“It hurts that he can walk the streets,” said the victim’s sister, Tonya Hardin.

“My brother is not here and he’s free. It is not right. Probation for murder is not right. It never will be right,” she said.

Under Crawford’s probation requirements, he’s supposed to carry a picture of the man he killed in his wallet. He is also required to carry a sign, five times a year, that says “ I murdered a citizen in Humble."

The judge put Crawford on notice that he will go to jail if he does not complete his community service.

I DO NOT THINK CRAWFORD should get any time whatsoever FOR SHOOTING HARDIN. AND the two stupid women in Court acting like fools should be slapped upside the head to learn some manners. My gosh, it has been ten years and they are acting like Hardin was a saint and that they are still NOT over it. MY GOSH something is wrong with them and NOT CRAWFORD and that is for sure.

Hardin was doing a job that he knew was high risk and HE did it willingly. IF he is anything like his sister, he must have been a fat lazy POS!

Tow Truck Drivers are corrupt and skanks(ALL OF THEM) and I have been at the rage end of these fat jerks who repossess cars for a living. THEY ARE ALL LAZY POS's! I had my car called in abandoned by a fat sick greasy pimple faced stinky azz wrecker driver for me telling him to back off me when he was flirting with me. HE towed my car from a public five star hotel where I was having to stay for my job.

MY car note was NOT only up-to-date, the monthly payments were three months ahead so HE HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO LIE and call it in abandoned to get permission to tow it and to get even with me for me telling him to go suck a duck. IT took me months and months to get my car situation straight after this because the Lien holder did NOT want to take responsibility for what they approved based on the SKANKY AZZED wrecker driver' lie and what he did. THEY had to eat months and months of storage charges as well as all the tow charges and all associated charges as well as explain it to their bosses.

I HATE WRECKER DRIVERS THEY ARE ALL POS'S AND SO WAS HARDIN. YOU TWO WOMEN NEED TO SHUT UP AND TAKE ACTING CLASSES. YOU FAKE BIOTCHES. PEOPLE like those two idiots on TV need to be moved out of civilized society.

Real fine citizen here making this type of comment and anonymous at that! Let me guess....your last name must either be Crawford or you are the type of person that would be on a jury and give a convicted murderer probation.

May God Bless you because it's quite obvious that you need some help! Hope you NEVER have anyone that you care about murdered and then have someone anonymous talk crap about you. REMEMBER THIS....WHAT COMES AROUND GOES AROUND....WHAT YOU SOW YOU SHALL ALSO REAP!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Anonymous - first post,

How dare you insult someone who has lost a loved one. You are the POS animal not to mention a liar.

I've had my car towed. You go down pay the fine and pick up your car. If your car was inpounded for months you did something wrong. This has nothing to do with a lien holder or the tow truck driver. It sounds like you had screwy paperwork and could not prove you owned the car.

I'd say you need some therapy so that you stop hating others and look in the mirror for what is wrong in your life.
